For most of the last month I've been taking part in the 30 day challenge that's part of an exercise videogame called EA Sports Active for the Nintendo Wii. I'll admit, I was skeptical of just how much of a workout the game actually was going to be. But it didn't take very long to prove that it's a pretty good butt kicker.
We've also got Wii Fit. Truth be told, I was expecting it to be a slower paced, more relaxed affair like that game is. But this is more of a Western exercise experience than an Eastern one. Don't get me wrong, they both have their benefits. And there are certain segments of Wii Fit that will get your heart pumping. But the rest of it pales in comparison to Active. There are many plyometric and calisthenic exercises designed to get your heart pumping. I'm about three weeks in, using the program in conjunction with the other exercise I do on a typical basis. And last night I had to pause the game on several different occasions because the workout was so taxing that I thought my legs were going to explode.
You might be scoffing and thinking that I'm horribly out of shape or that I'm weak if a game is wearing me out, but trust me, you would be dripping with sweat as well after 45 sustained minutes of going through the paces this game puts you through. Exercise games may seem like a big fad on the Wii right now, and there's no shortage of titles to choose from. But I highly suggest investing in EA Sports Active if you're looking for a quality exercise game. The program is challenging, yet there's enough variety that you never get bored and the exercises are kept short enough that you're always doing something different. True, there can be some frustrating tracking issues between the Wiimote and nunchuck that result in you spending more time on an exercise, but the upside means that it's all the more calories that are burned. Do you have Active or another similar exercise game? What do you think of it?
